Big potential for digitizing wage payments in Cambodia’s garment factories

This article discusses a study on the potential for digitizing garment worker wages in Cambodia, where only 18% of adults have a bank account and 85% of garment workers are women. Despite growing access to digital financial services, most wages in the sector are still paid in cash. To better understand the opportunities and challenges of wage digitization, IFC partnered with BSR’s HERproject, under the IFC/ILO Better Work program, and collaborated with Microfinance Opportunities. Beginning in November 2020, the study gathered insights from interviews and surveys with over 400 workers and managers from more than 100 factories—half of which pay wages digitally and half in cash.
