Scaling up digital wages: Empowering migrant workers and their families for inclusion and security

Migrant workers contribute to growth and development in destination and origin countries. Yet migrant workers often face challenges and risks including limited access to affordable remittance and other financial services, late or non-payment of wages, and inadequate legal and social protection. Rapid changes in the financial sector have led to the emergence of digital wage payment solutions and associated financial services that can strengthen the protection of migrant workers’ wages and provide a stronger pathway to financial inclusion. This session, held during the 2023 Financial Inclusion Week, discussed how and under which conditions, digital wage solutions associated with financial innovations can deliver economic and social benefits to women and men migrant workers and their families but also to the wider economy in destination and origin countries.
